The Space
The area we used was a previously un-used small plot of land that had old tree stumps, shrubbery, and general overgrown roots and vines. Deer overrun the area, so we protect the garden with 8ft fencing to enclose it between the house and the neighboring building.
In 2020 we added 6 raised boxes to incorporate root vegetables, as well as produce that would enjoy trellising up the fences.
The Dirt
We use a combination of our own compost, cow manure, and peat moss in the dirt every Spring. For every new planting, it will get a till and a minor refresh of the dirt nutrients.
Never any pesticides, never any chemicals, never any bottled fertilizer. All natural, organic ingredients used in these beds. Plus well water.
The Seasons
Our homestead resides in a Zone 6b area. We plant outdoors from April thru October.
The Maintenance
Since our garden resides underneath large Maple and Pine trees, we are constantly weeding.
Watering is automated for mornings using a timer and a sprinkler system.
Bugs? Of course we have them. Natural oil deterrents and other predator organisms used for traditional farm methods of pest control.
The garden gets a good once-over at least weekly for weeding, pruning, and general upkeep.
